What To Do When You Have To Wait To Move Into Your New Place

While the real estate market might be showing some signs of slowing down, here in California and in our neighboring states, it’s still pretty crazy. It’s far from unheard of for people to sell their home faster than they can find their new place, which leaves people scrambling to find affordable temporary housing, for both them and their household goods. Fortunately, Ace Moving can help.

Why are people left without a new place?

Most people are not in a position of buying their new home until they sell their current home. When homes are selling in just days, it’s very common that there’s a gap between selling the old home and buying the new one, especially if you find yourself in bidding wars in your destination city. For many of our customers, that might mean weeks of homelessness, at least for their household goods.

Where can temporarily homeless people live before moving into their new place?

Friends and family

Fortunately, there are several options for those who find themselves temporarily homeless. The first should be to ask friends and family. The more people you can ask, the better. That way, if you begin to wear out your welcome, you’ll have a backup plan.

Airbnb/VRBO

Short-term housing situations such as Airbnb and VRBO were designed for people who need a place to crash for a few days or weeks. Make sure that the home is suitable for your needs. If you have a pet, make sure they allow pets. Do you cook meat? Some are owned by vegans and meat is forbidden, at least indoors. Is the place close to your job or to public transportation?

Extended stay hotels

Most extended stay hotels offer conveniences that regular hotel rooms might not have, along with some that are standard with hotels. Most offer kitchenettes. Some offer housekeeping service, but it might only be once a week. Most extended stay hotels have laundry facilities, and some have gyms and business centers.

What you should take with you to your new place? What should you do with the rest of your stuff?

Most temporary housing situations are furnished, so you shouldn’t need to bring much more than the essentials, such as clothing, toiletries, pet supplies and electronics. For the rest, everything can be moved into temporary storage.

It’s usually cheaper to move into your movers’ storage facility because you don’t have to pay for travel back and forth. They’ll keep everything protected until your goods are safely delivered into your new home. At Ace Moving, our storage facility is spotless and we’ll be ready to deliver everything to you as soon as you’re ready.
