How Much Does a Pool Table Weigh? Is It Worth Shipping?

Pool table weight & long-distance shipping

How Much Does a Pool Table Weigh?

A pool table can weigh a few hundred pounds or more than 1,000 pounds, depending on its size and construction. Manufacturer examples range from the 306-pound Hathaway Alpine, an 8-foot non-slate table, to Diamond Pro-Am slate tables listed at 800, 1,000 and 1,200 pounds for their 7-, 8- and 9-foot sizes.

The exact model matters more than a size label alone. Start with its published weight, then check the complete cost of transporting it before deciding whether it is worth shipping.

How much does a pool table weigh by size and model?

The table below compares specific manufacturer listings. These are examples, not universal weights for every table of the same size. A lightweight non-slate design and a substantial slate model can both be sold as an 8-foot table.

The Winfield figure uses a different weight basis from the table specifications above. Brunswick notes that weight can vary with wood species and leg options. Confirm the specification for your exact table before arranging transport.

If you are checking the weight because you are relocating, the next question is whether shipping the table costs less than replacing it. Keep both the weight and the service requirements in view.

Why do slate pool tables weigh so much?

A pool table’s weight comes from more than its playing surface. The bed, supporting structure and fitted components all contribute. That is why a single “average pool table weight” can be a poor guide to your actual shipment.

The playing bed

Slate is a stone playing bed. HDF is a wood-fiber board. Identify which your table uses before comparing it with another model; the felt covering alone does not tell you.

The cabinet and frame

The support structure adds to the load. Compare the complete model specification rather than using the weight of its slate as the weight of the whole table.

Size and extras

Cabinet dimensions and fitted equipment affect the shipment. List a dining top, cue rack, stools and other accessories separately so they are accounted for in the quote.

Slate configuration also matters for handling. Diamond advertises one-piece and three-piece slate options. Dividing a slate bed into sections changes how it can be handled; it does not make the stone disappear from the shipment’s total weight. Ask the transporter to confirm the correct preparation method for your model.

Is table weight the same as shipping weight?

No. These specifications answer different questions:

  • Table or product weight: the manufacturer’s figure for the listed product. Read its notes to see what is included.
  • Slate-only weight: the weight of the playing bed or slate set, excluding the rest of the table.
  • Packed shipping weight: the load prepared for transport, potentially including a pallet, crate and protective materials.

A manufacturer example: 570 lb versus 620 lb

Diamond lists its 8-foot three-piece replacement slate set at 570 lb in its product specifications and 620 lb in its shipping specifications. Those figures describe that slate product, not a complete 8-foot table. The 50-pound difference also shows why the packed load needs its own specification.

A secondhand table may be packed differently from a new factory shipment. Give the carrier the manufacturer’s information, then have the final packed dimensions and weight confirmed. Do not assume that removing the legs changes the shipment’s total weight if the legs are traveling with it.

How can you find your pool table’s actual weight?

  1. Identify the model. Check your receipt, manual or an accessible identification label. Photograph identifying details without lifting or tipping the table.
  2. Match the construction. Record the size, playing-bed material and slate configuration, if known. Ask the manufacturer or a billiard-table professional to resolve anything uncertain.
  3. Read the weight label carefully. Look for “shipping,” “net,” “assembled” or “slate” beside the number. Keep the original specification available for the quote.
  4. Confirm the transport load. Include the pieces being shipped, packing materials, accessories and packed dimensions. Mark an estimated weight as estimated.

Weight alone is not a handling plan. Brunswick recommends experienced professionals for moving a billiard table. Arrange preparation and destination setup with people familiar with the construction of your particular model.

How much does it cost to ship a pool table long distance?

$600–$1,500

Published long-distance benchmark

uShip’s pool table guide gives this range for moves over 100 miles and notes that larger or more complex jobs can cost more. It is a broad reference, not an Ace quote or an all-inclusive cross-country rate.

For a useful comparison, look at the route and the services as well as the pounds. Two similarly sized tables can have different packing needs, access restrictions and destination setup requirements. A transport price is only comparable with another price when the scope is comparable.

What should the shipping quote include?

  • Preparation: any disassembly and the person responsible for it.
  • Packing: protection for the slate, cabinet and parts, including any crating or palletizing.
  • Transportation: pickup, linehaul and delivery, with the access arrangements specified.
  • Destination work: unloading, placement, reassembly and leveling, where required.
  • Other charges: stairs, restricted access, storage, repairs, taxes or any separately selected shipment protection.

Have the provider mark each service as included, separately priced or excluded. If a quote bundles several services, count that charge once. When the table is traveling with the rest of your home, ask about the additional cost of including it in your long-distance move.

Is your pool table worth shipping or replacing?

Compare the total cost of keeping your existing table with the net cost of an equivalent replacement. A cheaper table with a different playing surface or condition may not be an equivalent substitute.

Keep and ship

Preparation + packing + transport + destination setup + other required costs

Include any necessary repair or cloth work in the comparison. Check that the written total covers the services you need.

Sell and replace

Comparable table + delivery + setup + tax − net sale proceeds

Use a realistic resale amount after selling costs. Compare tables with similar construction, condition and playing quality.

Illustration only—not a shipping quote

If shipping and setup total $1,800, while an equivalent replacement costs $4,000 delivered and installed, selling your current table for $800 net makes replacement a $3,200 decision.

In that example, shipping costs $1,400 less. Change the inputs to your actual quotes before deciding.

Shipping deserves a closer look when the table is in good condition, difficult to replace or meaningful to your family. Replacing it may make more sense when the complete transport and repair bill exceeds the cost of a suitable alternative. If one quote omits setup or crating, get that missing cost before choosing.

Also confirm that the destination room suits the table and leaves space to play. For other large items on your inventory, our guide to moving furniture versus selling and starting fresh uses the same total-cost approach.

What information do you need for a pool table shipping quote?

Send the same details to each provider so the estimates are easier to compare:

  • Manufacturer, model and nominal size.
  • Published weight and its measurement basis.
  • Slate or non-slate construction; slate configuration if known.
  • Photos, overall dimensions and existing condition.
  • Pickup and delivery ZIP codes and requested dates.
  • Stairs, elevators, doorways and truck access at both ends.
  • Required preparation, packing and destination setup.
  • Accessories, storage needs and whether it joins a household move.

If a detail is unknown, say so. A useful estimate starts with an accurate description, not a guessed weight or an assumption that every pool table can be handled the same way.

Pool table weight and shipping questions

How much does a 7-foot slate pool table weigh?

There is no single weight for every 7-foot slate table. The Diamond Pro-Am example above is listed at 800 pounds. Use the manufacturer’s specification for your model and confirm whether the number includes packing.

How much does an 8-foot pool table weigh?

Construction makes a substantial difference. The examples above include a 306-pound Hathaway Alpine with an HDF playing surface and a 1,000-pound Diamond Pro-Am slate table. Neither figure should be treated as the weight of every 8-foot table.

Does shipping weight always include a crate?

Do not assume it does. Read the manufacturer’s packaging notes and ask the carrier what will be included in your particular load. A factory shipping specification may not describe the packing used for a later household shipment.

Does a heavier pool table always cost more to ship?

Weight is only one part of the quote. Route, packed dimensions, access and required services also matter. Compare written estimates for the same shipment details rather than multiplying the table’s weight by an assumed per-pound rate.

Taking your pool table on a long-distance move?

Ask Ace what transporting your model would involve. Have the table details, pickup and delivery ZIP codes, and access information ready so you can discuss the service requirements and compare the cost with replacement.
