A 2026 Bay Area rent report placed San Jose among the top five priciest rental markets in the United States, with median rent near $2,700. The same report listed Oakland lower, with a one-bedroom rent around $2,000.

Oakland has many older apartment buildings, duplexes, converted homes, and neighborhood-specific housing styles. That can mean more character, but it can also mean tighter staircases, limited elevators, street parking, and more complicated moving access.
